TD-SCDMA: Ix-nay on the Rap-cay Andsets-hay

Marbridge Daily reports:
After receiving a free TD-SCDMA handset on August 6, a friendly user in China Mobile’s (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) commercial TD-SCDMA trials discovered that his handset, a Panda TD988, would not power-on. When visiting China Mobile’s authorized repair center he found another 20 people also looking to repair their Panda handsets. However they were all told that their handsets were not covered by the company’s maintenance agreement. After discussions with China Mobile, the repair center finally began servicing the devices on August 13.
…Since initial publication, several different Chinese language news reports regarding the malfunctioning handsets have been removed from the sites where they were published.
Kudos to Marbridge Daily, who cover all this stuff in exhaustive detail.
I wonder if, at some point, these stories will transition from “birth pang” to “white elephant”.

Can’t power off? Sounds like a handset problem. I’m no great defender of TD-SDCMA (Tang Dynasty System Can’t Do Much of Anything), but the Panda problem underscores that China has a few companies in the mobile handset business who should be making other things.
